Until l985, widows of workers killed on the job collected a survivor pension ONLY as long as they remained single. After 1985, the province allowed widows to keep their survivor pensions, regardless of marital status. To compensate for the earlier policy, the gov't offered a lump-sum payment to women who had already lost their benefits. Many women didn't take it. Now, they're ready to take their case to court. Six months ago, Hussen Mohammed rode his bike along a rural dirt road in southern Manitoba. By mistake, he crossed into the U.S. Mohammed was born in Somalia, but has lived in Cda for 20 yrs. The U.S. authorities put him in jail, but they don't want to keep him. Cda doesn't want him, because he has a criminal record. His lawyer is worried that Mohammed could spend the rest of his life in detention. Maria Baldini works with the Immigrant Law Center, in St Paul, Minnesota.

There's little hope for Montreal Expos fans. Club president, Claude Brochu struck an agreement with the team's other shareholders last fall. It gave them five months to refinance the team, secure government support for a new stadium, and buy him out. The deadline is Sat. Today Claude Brochu said there's not much chance of a deal.
